About the Band

Rileys Mountaineers has been playing old-timey, western, classic country and bluegrass music throughout the West for 20 years. While hoedowns and private events at the family’s orchard and farm setting in Oak Glen provide the anchor for the string band, traveling away from the farm is common for the largely family group; the band has performed for countless political dignitaries, service and benefit groups, at bluegrass festivals and community concerts, and at large-scale events and venues such as the Huck Finn Jubilee, The Huntington Library, End of Trail (SASS), and Rancho Los Alamitos. The Mountaineers have entertained thousands at home and abroad with their special variety of homespun traditional American music and song.

The Riley family forms the nucleus of the Mountaineers. Veteran banjo/guitar player and traditional dance caller, Dennis Riley, inspires the group’s old timey music and audience involvement in their shows. Son Devon Riley anchors the band on guitar and mandolin. Devon’s wife, lead singer/spoon player Shelli Riley, fills in the mix with traditional country favorites. The three combine to provide the bulk of the band’s rich and varied vocal harmonies. Devon’s brother, Tim Riley, joins the group regularly on guitar and other historic instruments to provide a depth of musicality that crosses genres.

Other regulars in the Mountaineers are veteran western music greats - Bob Helm on swing fiddle and Eric Cutshall on the bass and steel guitar. Occasionally for shows, Rileys Mountaineers also boasts extremely talented children and extended family members for a true Jamboree format that’s entertaining for audiences from youngsters to seniors.
